自从1955年Walsh发表了《原子吸收光谱在化学分析中的应用》以后,原子吸收光谱技术在世界上开始出现和应用,1957年英国Hilger和Watt公司最早生产了商品原子吸收专业装置。在上世纪60年代初,原子吸收光谱分析引起了国内一些光谱工作的重视,黄立本、张展霞相继有介绍性文章发表,徐宝玲全文译出Walsh的全文。1965年吴廷照教授和他领导的小组在国内最早开始进行火焰原子吸收分光光度计的实验室样机的研制工作。他们在当时极为艰苦的条件下大量翻阅了国外各种资料,自己动手研制了相关的元配件。1965年6月,他们将自行研制成功的镁空心阴极灯的灯胚安装在实验审型原子吸收分光光度计的灯座上,在灯尾管还连在真空-充气系统上的条件下,只用了约3个小时就找到的消除分子线的方法和适当的充气压强,发出纯净的Mg285.2nm的强分析线,随即得到国内第一个用原子吸收分光光度法测定镁的结果,计算出的灵敏度达到文献上的最佳标准。至此,国内第一台实验型原子吸收分光光度计在北京有色金属研究院诞生了,全今已经整整40年。第一台实验室原子吸收的诞生,为我国原子吸收事业的普及和发展起到了先导作用。从此以后吴廷照教授全身心的投入到了我国原子吸收光谱仪器和分析事业的推广、发展上,40年来他一直不停的奋斗在原子吸收的发展事业上,为我国原子吸收光谱仪器的发展做出了突出的贡献。在这期间,他的脚步几乎遍布我国所有原子吸收光谱仪器早期的生产厂家,为各个厂家解决生产中遇到的各种难题。
