Thirty-six years ago Hufnagel completed the first aortic valve replacement by transplanting artificial valves into the descending aorta. To date, surgical methods have been used to replace heart valves. The author’s research lies in developing a percutaneously implantable prosthetic valve to avoid general anesthesia and open heart surgery. Ten adult mongrel dogs have been aortic valve implantation in this way and some improvements have been made to their design. The valve replacement used by the author is a ball-cage flap. The entire valve device can be folded and passed through the 11F catheter system, which self-expands and opens automatically as soon as it is delivered out of the catheter.
