Young adult rats were fed a 6% casein diet for one week prior to simultaneous intravenous administration of ~ 3H-thymidine and ~ (14) G-orotate. One hour later, the synthesis of hepatic rRNA and nuclear DNA was compared, and the subcellular distribution of DNA, RNA, and protein was studied. Limiting the protein in the feed causes a decrease in the amount of RNA and protein in the cytoplasm, but it does not change in each section.
