When Kate Chopin’s awakening was published, he was attacked by public opinion for daring to describe the awakening of female self-awareness and sexual consciousness. At that time, readers believed that women could only play the roles of wife and mother, and thus it was difficult to accept the protagonist Traditional rebellion. With the rise of the feminist movement in the 20th century, people rediscovered the value of “awakening” and included it in the ranks of American classics. Recalling the history of “awakening” criticism, we can find that the changes of society, the impact of social thoughts and the new development of literary criticism theory will all affect people’s acceptance and judgment of a literary work.
