As early as 1929 Drury and Szent-Gyrgy have found that the inhibitory effect of many tissue extracts on the heart is mainly due to the adenosine and adenosine contained therein. Holton (1959) retrograde stimulation of rabbit auricle caused by the expansion of the rabbit ear vascular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) release, suggesting that ATP may be primary afferent neurotransmitter. Burnstock is studying the stomach
