中国的重工业在18世纪后半叶的洋务运动中兴起,张之洞是开创者之一。他创办了中国第一个钢铁大联合企业——汉冶萍煤铁厂矿公司,简称汉冶萍公司,它统辖汉阳铁厂、大冶铁矿和萍乡煤矿。汉冶萍公司之前,中国尚无大型冶铁炼钢企业,仅有的为数不多的冶铁的小土炉,产量低、质量次、成本高。因此洋铁大量拥入中国。1890年(光绪十六年),张之洞在湖北汉阳开办铁厂,在大冶开办铁矿。1898年又在江西萍乡开办煤矿。1908年这三个企业合并成汉冶萍公司。
China’s heavy industry rose in the Westernization Movement of the latter half of the 18th century, and Zhang Zhidong was one of the pioneers. He founded China’s first large steel joint venture - Han Ye Ping Coal and Iron Mine Company, referred to as Han Ye Ping Company, which governs Hanyang Iron Works, Daye Iron Mine and Pingxiang Coal Mine. Before Hyeri-Ping Company, there was no large iron-smelting steelmaking enterprise in China, only a few small iron-smelting furnaces with low output, high quality and high cost. In 1898, another coal mine was opened in Pingxiang, Jiangxi. In 1908 these three companies merged into Han Yee Ping Company.
