Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) is a hallmark protein of caveolae. Cav-1 plays an important role in the life activities of many kinds of cells. There is ample evidence that Cav-1 is involved in the development and progression of a variety of tumors, including breast, hepatocellular carcinoma, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer and renal clear cell carcinoma. Glioma is one of the central nervous system malignancies. Due to the existence of the cerebral blood barrier, many drugs hardly reach the lesion and thus have a high mortality rate. In recent years, Cav-1 is found to be a negative regulator of glioma cell proliferation, which can reduce the ability of glioma to migrate and invade. In addition, Cav-1 can increase the permeability of glioma blood barrier. This review summarizes the recent advances in the development of Cav-1 in glioma and its regulatory role in the blood-borne barrier, aiming to provide a new idea for the clinical treatment of gliomas.
