“YOURE too small, Ginny, youll never make an Olympic team,” said my firstever rowing (赛艇) coach, way back in the late winter of 1978. I had just 16 my dream. It was sure too big at that point to somebody whose 17 not only mattered, but whose emotional support could play a key role.
Then I was just 20, and still a(n) 18 athlete. Maybe my dream wasnt based on reality. After all, I had tried out for the national team for the first time the previous year and been 19. I lacked the height that most Olympic rowers possess, not to 20 much experience as an athlete, and I suffered from asthma, but still, I was shocked by my coachs response. 21 not just by his choice of words, but by his certainty, I left the gym in a panic.
As I walked, I began to rethink my future, making room for my coachs opinion, setting 22 my dream. A small inner voice had joined forces with the coachs. “Maybe hes 23.”
But then, another voice 24. “What does he know? Why does he get to decide?” That my own coach didnt have faith in me didnt mean I had to give up on myself so quickly. By the time I arrived back at my apartment, I was 25 my coach. And my 26 was back on center stage.
27 came easy when it came to fulfilling that dream. I tried out for two more national teams and two different coaches cut me.
But I was driven by my love of the 28 of rowing. I wanted to row 29 the best and I refused to stop until I achieved my goal.
I made that 1980 team, 30 not getting to compete at the Olympics. I kept training four more years, and 31 won silver at the 1984 Olympics.

Grownups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it.
In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn.
The multiplication tables (乘法口訣表)are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood. The law of overlearning explains why cramming (突击学习) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for ones future development.
38. Whats the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A. Children have a better memory than grownups.
B. People remember well what they learned in childhood.
C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words. D. Stories for children are easy to remember.

B. setting down general rules
C. using examples
D. making a comparison
40. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is .
A. a result of overlearning
B. a special case of cramming
C. a skill to deal with math problems
D. a basic step towards advanced studies
41. What is the authors opinion on cramming?
A. It leads to failure in college exams.
B. It increases students learning interest.
C. Its possible to result in poor memory.
D. Its helpful only in a limited way.

In a historic moment on June 26, the US Supreme Court ruled that samesex marriage is a legal right across all 50 states. The Supreme Court justices ruled states cannot deny gay men and women the same marriage rights. The decision means the 13 states with bans on samesex marriage are no longer able to enforce them.
Samesex couples “ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law”. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion, “The Constitution grants them that right.”
The decision came after decades of litigation (诉讼) and activism. It set off celebrations across the US. In affected states including Georgia, Michigan, Ohio and Texas, samesex couples rushed to wed, while officials in Mississippi and Louisiana said marriages had to wait until procedural issues were addressed, reported the BBC.
According to “The New York Times”, the ruling came against the backdrop of fastmoving changes in public opinion in the US, with polls indicating that most Americans now approve of samesex marriage.
US President Barack Obama welcomed the ruling, saying it “affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts.” “Today,” he said in a press release, “we can say, in no uncertain terms, that we have made our union a little more perfect.”
Another win.
This was the second time the Supreme Court took up samesex marriage, according to an article in “Business Insider”. The first time, in June 2013, the court made a decision that allowed the US federal government to recognize samesex marriages in states where they were already legal.
But at that time, the Supreme Court declined to rule on the broader question about gay marriage: Is there a constitutional (憲法的) right to samesex marriage? The June 26 ruling gave a positive answer to that question. Justice Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion that the Constitution should evolve with societal changes.
“The nature of injustice is that we may not always see it in our own times,” he wrote. “The generations that wrote and ratified the “Bill of Rights” and the “Fourteenth Amendment (修正案)” did not exactly know the extent of freedom in all of its dimensions, and so they hoped the future generations can protect the right of all persons to enjoy liberty as we learn its meaning.”
The Fourteenth Amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the law. In the June 26 ruling, the Supreme Court declared that the equal protection clause of the amendment requires marriage rights be extended to samesex couples, too.
42. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. The majority of Americans now object to samesex marriage.
B. Gay men and women did not care about the ruling.
C. All the US states did not ban samesex marriage before the ruling.
D. The US president believes the country will be less perfect after the ruling.
43. It can be inferred that .
A. before June 26, most Americans have doubt about samesex marriage.
B. this is the first time the Americans have got the samesex marriage right.
C. thanks to the amendment, all the samesex couples can get married immediately.
D. Americans struggled for decades to win the samesex right.
44. Why does the author refer to Justice Kennedys “the nature of injustice is that we may not always see it in our own times”?
A. The author thinks it is unfair for samesex marriage not to have the marriage right.
B. The author wants to show it is difficult for samesex marriage couple to get the right.
C. The author thinks that in our own times we can not see the justice.
D. The author shows his dissatisfaction with the delayed approval of the legal samesex marriage.

My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America. America was where all my mothers hopes lay. She had come here in 1949 after losing everything in China. But she never looked back with regret. There were so many ways for things to get better.
“Of course you can be a prodigy, too,” my mother told me when I was nine. “You can be best at anything.” We didnt immediately pick the right kind of prodigy. At first my mother thought I could be a Chinese Shirley Temple. Wed watch Shirleys old movies on TV as though they were training films. My mother would poke my arm and say, “Ni kan”—You watch. And I would see Shirley tapping her feet, or singing a sailor song, or pursing her lips into a very round O while saying, “Oh my goodness.” Soon after my mother got this idea about Shirley Temple, she took me to a beauty training school and put me in the hands of a student who could barely hold the scissors without shaking. Instead of getting big fat curls, I emerged with an uneven mass of crinkly black fuzz. My mother dragged me off to the bathroom and tried to wet down my hair.
“You look like Negro Chinese,” she lamented, as if I had done this on purpose.
In fact, in the beginning, I was just as excited as my mother, maybe even more so. I pictured this prodigy part of me as many different images, trying each one on for size. I was a dainty ballerina girl standing by the curtains, waiting to hear the right music that would send me floating on my tiptoes. I was Cinderella stepping from her pumpkin carriage with sparkly cartoon music filling the air.
In all of my imaginings, I was filled with a sense that I would soon become perfect. My mother and father would adore me. I would be beyond reproach. I would never feel the need to sulk for anything.
But sometimes the prodigy in me became impatient. “If you dont hurry up and get me out of here, Im disappearing for good,” it warned. “And then youll always be nothing.”
Every night after dinner, my mother and I would sit at the Formica kitchen table. She would present new tests, taking her examples from stories of amazing children she had read and a dozen other magazines she kept in a pile in our bathroom. My mother got these magazines from people whose houses she cleaned. She would look through them all, searching for stories about remarkable children.
The first night she brought out a story about a threeyearold boy who knew the capitals of all the states and even most of the European countries. A teacher was quoted as saying the little boy could also pronounce the names of the foreign cities correctly.
“Whats the capital of Finland?” my mother asked me, looking at the magazine story.
All I knew was the capital of California, because Sacramento was the name of the street we lived on in Chinatown. “Nairobi!” I guessed, saying the most foreign word I could think of. She checked to see if that was possibly one way to pronounce “Helsinki” before showing me the answer.
The tests got harder—multiplying numbers in my head, finding the queen of hearts in a deck of cards, trying to stand on my head without using my hands, predicting the daily temperatures in Los Angeles, New York, and London. And after seeing my mothers disappointed face once again, something inside of me began to die. I hated the tests, the raised hopes and failed expectations. Before going to bed that night, I looked in the mirror and when I saw only my face staring back—and that it would always be this ordinary face—I began to cry. Such a sad, ugly girl! I made high pitched noises like a crazed animal, trying to scratch out the face in the mirror.
And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy side of me—because I had never seen that face before. I looked at my reflection, blinking so I could see more clearly. The girl staring back at me was angry, powerful. This girl and I were the same. I had new thoughts, willful thoughts, or rather thoughts filled with lots of wonts. I wont let her change me, I promised myself. I wont be what Im not.
45. The underlined word “prodigy” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to .
A. talentB. professor
C. leaderD. superstar
46. Why did the mother and the girl watch Shirleys old movies on TV?
A. Because the mother was a fan of Shirley Temple.
B. Because Shirley Temples hairstyle was very popular among children.
C. Because the girl resembled Shirley Temple in appearance.
D. Because the mother wanted her daughter to be a Chinese Shirley Temple.
47. How did the girl feel about the tests she did every night?
A. She felt confident and finished it smoothly.
B. She got through the tests painfully.
C. She failed the tests and began to lose confidence.
D. She eventually sadly found herself ordinary and ugly.
48. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 13 mean?
A. The mother was not sure about the answer and wanted to confirm it.
B. The mother expected her daughter to know the right answer.
C. The answers were more than one and the mother checked them.
D. The mother was disappointed and gave up her daughter.
49. What might happen after the last paragraph?
A. The girl might try her best to become famous and successful.
B. The girl might do what she really likes.
C. The girl might do whatever her mother asks and become a different image.
D. The mother might change her attitude and listen to her daughters words.
50. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A. Being Myself or Not
B. Educational Failure
C. Difficult American Childhood D. Mothers Experience

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填1个单词。
If your determination for the new year is typical, it probably includes a commitment to lose weight. But if you are like most Americans, any success you have cutting pounds will be shortlived, and youll end the year weighing more than you do right now.
So why are Americans addicted to weight loss? Many people say they want to lose weight to improve their health, but this may not actually be their primary motivation. In one of the more interesting surveys Ive seen, more than threefourths of the 231 dieters surveyed said that they would take a pill that would guarantee they would achieve or maintain their desired weight even if it would lower their life expectancy. On average, they were willing to give up 5.7 years.
These findings may seem puzzling, but they are not so surprising when you consider weightloss attempts for what they really are: efforts to protect against weightbased discrimination.
Yale researchers have shown that weight discrimination in the US has increased dramatically in the last decade and is now comparable in prevalence (普遍) to rates of reported racial discrimination, especially among women.
Multiple studies have documented weight prejudice in employment, healthcare, education and public spaces—unequal treatment based on stereotyping (模式化) fat people as lazy, unmotivated, sloppy and lacking in selfcontrol and competence.
When I was doing research for a book on the social understanding of fat, several heavy women told me they were often blamed for eating in public. Some tearfully shared stories of having had people actually throw food at them. Heavy women are routinely teased in advertisements, television and film.
Of course, there are genuine health risks associated with higher body mass. The clearest case is that of Type 2 diabetes, which becomes more likely as weight goes up.
It is clear that antifat prejudice in and of itself has a bad effect on public health in ways many may not suspect.
Fear of tease leads many heavier women to avoid exercising in public or even—when they are very heavy—to avoid leaving their homes, taking away social interaction from them. And the fear of becoming fat can lead women of all sizes to develop eating disorders that can reduce their lives and be dangerous to their health.
What should be done about weightbased discrimination? The answer is to call for increasing tolerance and appreciation of diverse body types. This year, before setting about another diet, ask yourself why you want to lose weight. If it is to improve your health, perhaps you should focus on healthincreasing behaviors that are more directly linked to health: swear, for example, to get more sleep, eat more fruits and vegetables, get regular physical activity, or spend more time with friends.
But if you are trying to change your body to protect against discrimination and shame, consider making a different kind of new years determination: to stand up to intolerance and prejudice in all its various forms.
