世界上一些工业发达国家,管道业也十分发达,在人口稠密地区,各种地面和地下管道纵横交错,经常进行新管道铺设作业。为适应发达地区的管道铺设,正在应用管道无沟铺设技术。无沟铺设技术与传统施工技术不同。它不需开挖管沟,是用钻孔作业,靠钻具直接把泥土挤压到孔道的四周,进而形成所需直径的管道孔。因而,节省挖沟和回填土所需要的资金和劳动力。美国天然气研究所于1988年研制出一种Hole—Hog式导向气动钻具和一套用于跟踪钻具在地下水平和垂直位置的电子装置。
