to face the music—to be responsible for some consequence
to get wind of—to get information about something
to smell a cat—to suspect something not quite right diamond cut diamond.
Rome was not built in a day. 谚语中的“Rome”不能换成“Paris”,“a day”也不能换成“a week”。 又如:to kick the bucket(翘辫子)。如:John kicked the bucket。如果换成被动语态就不再是这个意义,eg:The bucket was kicked by John.此外,“kick the bucket”由三个自由词素组成,既不能随意增删,如不能说成“kick the big bucket”或“kick bucket”,也不能替换成“kick the pail”。
a.重复。同一个单词,或者同一个意思用两个词重复,起到强调的作用,如:neck and neck并驾齐驱,不分上下;out and out彻头彻尾的(地);over and over/again反复,再三;doom and gloom悲观情绪;to pick and choose挑三拣四;null and void法律上无效的;ways and means方法,手段。
b.对照。例如:to hit or miss不论成功与否,漫无目的地;to make or mar或成之,或毁之;to sink or swim沉浮全凭自己,不管成败如何;kill or cure不是全胜就是大败。
c. 例如:to marry into the purple—to marry a king or prince嫁入豪门、王室;to drink like a fish—to be an excessive drinker牛饮,大喝。
ever and anon不时地+ now and then偶尔 →every now and then时而,偶尔
rarely + hardly ever →rarely ever难得,极少
Don’t count your chickens—Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched. Neither fish, flesh, fowl nor good red herring—to be neither one thing nor the other, with the result that it doesn’t satisfy anyone.
a dog in the manger—one who denies to others the pleasures he cannot enjoy himself占着茅坑不拉屎的人
to be made a cat’s paw of—to serve as a tool for someone else被人利用
to kill the goose that lays the golden egg—to destroy the source of one’s wealth杀鸡取卵
Sour grapes—to disparage something because it is unattainable
to cry “wolf”—to sound false alarm so many times that, when at last you sound genuine alarm, no one will come to your aid报假信,假警报
a Trojan horse—an enemy concealed within暗藏祸端的内因,内部颠覆者
as mad as a March Hare—insane(象三月里的野兔一般)疯狂
to grin like a Cheshire cat—to grin widely, from ear to ear(象柴郡猫般)咧嘴傻笑的人
to have one’s pound of flesh—to exact what is due,to the very ounce合理但不合情的要求
It’s all Greek to me.
to be a Shylock-to be a ruthless, pitiless money-lender狠毒的放高利贷者
like a Micawber-someone who makes no revision for the future and hopes something will turn up米考伯式的人物,无远虑而老想着走运的乐天派
to separate/tell the sheep from the goats—to separate the good from the bad, the virtuous from the wicked明辨好坏;区分好人和坏人
to turn the other cheek—to submit to violence, not to resist甘愿挨打,不作反击
out of the ark—excessively old, ancient非常陈旧的
Achilles’ heel—the one and only weakness, but a fatal one
When in Rome, do as the Romans do—you should adopt the manners and customs of the people you are living with.
to try the patience of Job—to provoke even the most patient person即使约伯也受不了;怎么叫人受得了
to out-herod Herod—to exceed Herod in cruelty and wickedness残酷无比
Herculean efforts—immense,almost superhuman efforts
to show one’s cards—to show one’s intentions摊牌
in the long run—ultimately长久以往
to press the flesh—to canvass support in an election campaign by mixing with the voters, shaking hands, kissing babies and so on(尤指在政党竞选活动中与选民等人群)热忱握手,热情拥抱
