杨属树种繁多,分类学上一般把它分为五个派。白杨派中的毛白杨,是我省的重要乡土树种,具有材质好、寿命长、能长成大材等优点,据调查寿命可达百年以上,胸径可达1米以上,木材细密,经久不腐,可供家俱、建筑等用,远比黑杨派、青杨派各种的木材为好,是长期以来深受群众欢迎的重要四旁绿化树种。毛白杨的缺点是初期生长较慢,不易扦插繁殖;耐盐硷的能力较差,树冠宽大,作为农田林网树种,胁地较重。因此通过杂交育种的手段,创造此毛白杨更为速生优质的新种,就成了树木育种工作的当务之急。
