The demolition, transport and reassembly of the Axum Obelisk is a very complex scientific and cultural work. About 500 years ago, the monument collapsed after an earthquake and broke into five big blocks. It lies flat in the ancient city of Axum, close to another similar monument still standing today. In 1937, the components of the collapsed stele were loaded on board from Massawa, Eritrea, unloaded at the port of Naples and later transported by truck to Rome, eventually re-erected at Piazza Capena Square in the same year. The stone is made of granite with a total weight of 152 tons and a total length of about 24 meters. Its pivot is bronze (9 cm in diameter and 6 meters long) for connecting different components together.
