Alice Hamilton (1869-1970) is the authoritative authority on occupational health in the United States and a pioneer in industrial toxicology. She awakened the United States in the early twentieth century concerns about the dangers of industrial poisoning and hazardous working conditions. Through her tireless efforts, she exposed the toxic substances in the industries of lead, mining, paint, pottery and rayon and promoted the legislative process of occupational safety and health. Hamilton’s work to promote the American industry to reduce occupational hazards in the workplace, and promote the improvement of the quality of life of workers and the public. Alice Hamilton is widely recognized as the “mother of occupational health in the United States” for her contribution to the development of industrial hygiene and the prevention of occupational diseases.
