明代的武官可分为两类:一类是与五府及都司卫所有关的武职官系统,另一类是营伍及守城系统。本文侧重于考察后一系统中的操守、把总、提调和备御等,并在此基础上,提出以下值得关注的问题:其一,明初卫所军队一般分为城操军和屯田军等,后来屯田正军也有不少奉调守城或操练;其二,在守城堡武官系列中,除了守备、操守、把总(包括千总)以及备御、提调之外,也有—些是以防守的性质命名的;其三,即便在省镇营兵制盛行的明代中后期,也有一些守城堡官校以卫所官员充任。
