《文镜秘府论》提出文字皆本有,文章出自然,以正确的言语文章作为陶冶真言的规矩准绳,作为佛家大仙利益众生的基础,以为世间之文字和出世间之陀罗尼有密切联系,在几个层面上体现着佛学意识。空海把自己融入到汉文化之中,来阐释中国的文化,有一种中国意识。《文镜秘府论》主要编入实用性比较强的写作范式,并化繁为简,以便于日本的僧俗学子学汉诗汉文,其卷次的方位顺序,不用中国传统的东南西北,而用日本传统的东西南北,这又鲜明地体现着日本意识。
