SELECTION MECHANISM OF LANGUAGE INPUT AND OUTPUT THEORY AND ATTENTION The Krashen (1985) input hypothesis of language learning argues that the development of linguistic competence depends on comprehensible input, and obtaining as much intelligibility as possible is key to the acquisition of language. However, Krashen also believes that while input is indispensable for acquisition, it is not sufficient because affective filtering can hinder the entry into the language acquisition mechanism and the success of second language acquisition. Swain believes that “comprehensible input ” is important in language acquisition, but not enough for learners to fully develop their L2 proficiency.
