On December 6, 2010, Jiangsu and Hubei changed its leadership. Former governor of Jiangsu Luo Zhijun was appointed party secretary of Jiangsu. Li Hongzhong, former governor of Hubei, was also promoted to the party secretary of Hubei. The two provinces’ former party secretaries retired at the age of 65.
Li Hongzhong, 54, was under heavy scrutiny during the parliamentary sessions in March 2010. At that time, he was annoyed by a female journalist from Jinghua Times under the People’s Daily for she always asked him about the case of Deng Yujiao, who stabbed a government official to defend herself. Li took away the journalist’s recorder. The media taunted him as the “recorder-grabbing governor”.
After this accident, some celebrities advised to the National People’s Congress and asked him to apologize. However, Li claimed that this accident was due to misunderstanding and no apologies should be made because it “could fade away gradually”.
Some people think that this accident could affect Li’s political career path. However, his appointment as the party secretary shows that no bad influence has been applied.
Li Hongzhong’s rise is partially attributed to one of his previous positions – secretary for Li Tieying, who had once held an important position in the central government.
In 1982, when Li Hongzhong graduated from Jilin University, he became the secretary of Li Tieying, then the party secretary of Shenyang, Liaoning. From 1983 to 1987, Li Tieying took the positions of the party secretary of Liaoning, Minister of the Electrical Industry and Central Political Committee’s member, Li Hongzhong still worked as his secretary. In 1988, Li Hongzhong was appointed the vice mayor of Huizhou, Guangzhou. Then he gradually climbed to the highest position of this city. In 2004, Li was appointed mayor of Shenzhen and later party secretary of Shenzhen. In 2007 he took the governor of Hubei province. During his tenure in Shenzhen, he was praised by the media from mainland China and Hong Kong for his open mind.
