The crimes Pi Qiansheng was said to commit included: accepting bribery from a Wu-surnamed businessman totaling 7.55 million yuan (USD 1.13 million) when he was in charge of the Management Committee of Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Zone and then Binhai District.
In addition, Pi was accused of malpractice. He signed a contract about transferring stock rights of a state-owned company, which led to the loss of 220 million yuan (USD 33.04 million).
In October 2008, Pi Qiansheng was sacked from his post due to his crime. After careful investigation, the Central Department of Discipline Inspection confirmed his guilt of bribery and malpractice and reported his case to the court in June 2009, who started the trial several months later.
