现代中国水墨画,尤其是90年代以来的水墨画创作,有两种大趋势:从观念上分:一种在背离传统,一种在回归传统;从具体操作层面上分,一种强调书法式的书写性,一种强调工艺式的制作性.前者强调对笔墨的驾驭和表现意味,强调情绪的自然流露和点线布局的有机性;后者则在理性设计的前提下,强调由制作效果所带来的造景写意,同时亦充分地尝试各种制作手法;从审美效果的角度说,书写性要求深厚的书法根底,注重创作的心境和在创作过程中所体验到的审美愉悦,这也是传统文人画的主要特色;而制作性则是传统工笔画和现代工艺美术中常见的手法,要求别致的构思和精致的制作技巧,注重完成手段的变化性和画面最后的视觉效果.这虽然只是两种基本的划分,并不能涵盖全部现代水墨画创作的复杂性与多样性,但是却表明现代水墨画家一方面从图式上寻求突破,从古典形态走向现代形态,以便与西方现代艺术接榫;另一方面,则从思想根源上寻求深入,从现代形态逐渐走进古典形态,以阐释东方思想之精神.这两大格局形成了当下中国画坛现代与传统的双重变奏.
