It is estimated that Hong Kong has a population of 5.4 million and about 90% of them are Chinese. Hong Kong has a well-developed tourism industry with about 17 million tourists coming and going in 1984. Because of the frequent contacts between Hong Kong and tourists from countries with epidemics of acquired immunodeficiency virus (AIDS), it is expected that some people may have T-cell lymphotrophic virus type 3 (HTLV-III) infection in Hong Kong.
