A New Wave Absorber in the United Kingdom The United States is developing a new radar absorbing material that can be sprayed on transparent surfaces such as canopy and sensor ports to attenuate aircraft signal signatures. The Pentagon has considered buying many stealth aircraft, but with a sudden reduction in defense investment, war planners have had to rely on older aircraft, and the technology community is exploring new ways to reduce the radar signal characteristics of the aircraft. The animal’s eye’s reflection of the car’s headlights is the same as the radar’s reflection on transparent parts of the forward looking infrared and television cameras. This effect is called retroreflection. To reduce radar echoes, researchers are working on a variety of optically clear absorbing materials that can barely be detected by the radar if they are used on cockpit covers, Lantirn pods, SLAM or young missile head.
