After Tunisia’s independence in 1956, under the leadership of President Habib Bourguiba, the national economy achieved a relatively rapid and sustained development. In the seventies, Tunisia’s GNP grew at an average annual rate of 8%. In the 22 years from 1956 to 1978, its GNP increased by 6.3 times. In 1983, the per capita GNP reached 1,290 U.S. dollars. The economic management and development of a small country with a population of only a few million and less well-resourced has been among the best in Africa and is commended by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
