大约半个世纪以前的中国社会,在工艺美术领域,恐怕只有所谓“女红”一业,才是妇女的专有.此外就是从事窗花、剪纸、玩偶一类基本上属于“家务劳动”的民间艺术活动.近数十年来,随着生产发展、社会进步和中外文化经济交流的日益扩展,中国妇女在工艺美术领域的地位和作用已远非昔比.她们早已新军突起,成为中国工艺美术,特别是刺绣、织毯、玩具、编织、花画等主要行业中的主力军,甚至“整边天”.而在工艺美术领域里,与现代化工业生产和现代科学技术紧密相连的现代工业美术设计,则是在更为广阔的领域里,和广大人民的物质、文化生活关系更直接、更密切的工艺美术事业.在这方面,由于中国社会经济的长期落后,现代工业美术可说完全是一门新的艺术门类.它的起步虽然比较晚,但在中国那些为数不多的、有的现已谢世的老一辈工艺美术家、教育家的悉心培育下,发展还是迅速的.其中一批女设计艺术家、教育家也很快成长起来.随之她们又继承前代,继续培育了又一代女设计家和教育家.
