Coal residues and bark will replace peat as a new horticultural production substrate. The new matrix is a hybrid matrix made by scientists at the International Horticultural Research Center (HRI) in a ratio of two different materials, and its appearance will effectively alleviate peat mining problems. Peat as a substrate for cultivation has been widely used by global horticultural companies. In order to meet the demand of the industry, peat resources have been continuously exploited in recent years. Over-exploitation of resources has aroused the concern of environmentalists, so they have asked horticultural producers to reduce their use of peat. At the same time, researchers are strongly urged to find new cultivation bases instead of peat. It is in this situation, in 1977, HRI researchers began to develop a new matrix.
