１９３７年冬王明以共产国际代表的身份回国即对毛泽东在党内的领导地位构成了严重的挑战，以至在“十二月政治局会议”和“三月政治局会议”上数度得逞。面对王明的挑战和其推行的右倾错误，毛泽东进行了坚决的斗争并赢得了共产国际的支持，进而在１９３８年秋的中共六届六中全会上克服了王明的右倾错误，重新确立和最终巩固了其在党内的领导地位。
