形而上者谓之道,形而下者谓之器。我们中国的“上等人”一向重道而轻器,“下等人”则只管器而不大关心道。读书人都要去做人上人,把闻道看得无比重要,而器呢,自有人下人一代代口口相传地做去。这情形,只要看中国论道之书汗牛充栋,而论器之书寥寥可数,就可以知其大概。中国是以农立国的,但自先秦至明,研究农事的著作,可称的也只有《齐民要术》等有限的几部,不少还因不受重视而亡佚了。到徐光启著《农政全书》,已是受西方思想的影响了。
