OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of afferent nerve transection on the masseter muscle reflexes induced by anesthetized guinea pig vestibule and mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve. Methods: Twenty guinea pigs were randomly divided into 4 groups, 5 normal control group, 5 unilateral vestibular nerve resection group, 5 unilateral lower alveolar nerve transection group and 5 unilateral auricular temporal nerve transection group. The four groups of animals were respectively subjected to clicking acoustic stimulation for masseter reflex detection. Results: Negative wave (NP) threshold of the masseter muscle reflex potential was (90.00 ± 8.16) dBnHL in the normal control group. 100,90,80,70 dBnHL unilateral acoustic stimulation, ipsilateral recording masseter reflex NP extraction rate were 100%, 70%, 40%, 0.100,90,80 dBnHL unilateral acoustic stimulation masseter reflex NP The latency was (6.55 ± 0.25) ms, (6.61 ± 0.16) ms, (6.70 ± 0.13) ms respectively. There was no significant difference in latency of masseter reflex NP with different stimulus intensity (P> 0.05). Unilateral vestibular nerve cut off, the side of the sound of the masseter muscle reflex disappeared. Unilateral lower alveolar nerve and ear temporal nerve resection group, the masseter muscle reflex exists, NP threshold, latency and normal control group no significant difference (P> 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Acoustic-induced masseter reflexes are vestibular origins that are not affected by afferent fibers of the temporal branch of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve and the inferior alveolar nerve.
