According to a research report published by the Privacy Foundation, monitoring employees in the workplace was No. 1 in privacy issues in 2000. Last year, thousands of Americans were being monitored in the workplace as employers became more concerned about the productivity of employees and the use of the Internet by employees. The American Management Association said that two-thirds of U.S. companies have installed indoor electronic surveillance equipment and 27% of all companies surveyed monitor employee e-mail. This paternalistic management has left many people lost their jobs. Dow Chemical fired 24 employees and punished 235 people for finding employees storing and sending images of pornography or violence on corporate computers. After Xerox conducted electronic monitoring of its employees, it also fired employees for what it called bad behavior.
