Since 1980, a light radar system called Laser Painted Cloud (LCM) has provided an effective method for monitoring natural or artificial aerosols. Developed by Optech, this instrument is specifically designed for the observation of very close aerosol clouds. This optical radar is a system operating in the optical frequency range, but works in a similar manner to the radar system in the microwave area. The optical radar system used for atmospheric measurements uses the backscatter signals generated by the laser beam scattering and absorption processes to measure the properties of the atmosphere.
