2002年初,一本名为《灰姑娘日记——一个中国女学生的生活》的书在法国出版,谁知道它竟改变了作者马燕小姑娘的命运。马燕是宁夏南部山区西海固张家树村的一名初二学生。宁夏回族自治区有7个国家级贫困县.西海固地区所在县便是其中之一.曾被联合国粮农组织认定为不适合人群居住地区。这里土地贫瘠.十年九旱,人民生活十分贫困。由于当地重男轻女传统观念极为严重,所以女孩子没有上学权利。马燕有爸妈和两个弟弟,一家五口靠种田为生,生活十分贫困。爸妈要供她和两个弟弟上学.的确不易。然而在生性好强又有主见的小马燕的哭闹和坚持下,她便成为全村第一个上学的女孩。
