Rail joints are the weakest link in the railways. They are the focus of day-to-day maintenance in the public works department. The maintenance workload of the joints accounts for 60% to 70% of the maintenance workload of railways. The most fundamental reason for the occurrence of rail joints is that rail joints have discontinuities in rail structure and rail surface irregularities, which leads to large additional power between wheel and rail.
