腎上腺皮质产生一系列的类固醇激素,按照他們的主要作用可分为三类。第一类以皮质醇(Hydrocortisone,cortisol)和皮质素(Cortisone)为代表,具有抗蛋白质合成、促进蛋白质的分解代謝,从而形成糖元和葡萄糖的生理作用,且有抗炎、抗过敏和抗毒的药理作用。第二类主要是醛固酮(Aldosterone)和去氧皮质酮(Des-oxycorticosterone),与水盐代謝有关,具有强烈的存鈉排鉀的作用。第三类是性激素包括雄激素(Androgens)和雌激素(Estrogens),都有合成蛋白质的作用。
