1948年6月3日,全世界人士所瞩目的人类的巨眼——200吋远镜——在美国加州的帕洛玛天文台(图一)举行奉献礼。与会来宾达800人以上,除新闻记者外,大部份是天文界和学术界知名之士,其中最受人注意的是已故海尔博士(Dr.G.E.Hale)的夫人,海尔是200吋远镜最初的设计者和帕洛玛天文台的手创者。奉献礼在下午二时开始,被邀请的各界来宾自上午十一时半起已陆续来到,沿着上山公路,汽车整日不绝,盛况空前。
On June 3, 1948, the giant human eye, the 200-inch binocular, which attracted worldwide attention, held a gift of honor at the Paloma Observatory in California (Figure 1). More than 800 guests were invited to attend the conference, most of whom are notable astronomers and academics except journalists. One of the most notable is the late Dr. GEHale’s wife, Haier, who is 200 inches away The original designer of the mirror and the creator of Palomar Observatory. Dedication ceremony started at 2:00 pm. Guests from all walks of life were invited to come one after another since 11:30 am. Along the uphill road, the cars have been running through the whole day without exception.
