西汉末年开始,社会上流行一种预卜吉凶的迷信预言和隐语,叫做“谶”。这种“谶”既有文字,又有图画,所以也叫做“图谶”。图谶本是当时的一些巫师和方士编造出来的,却托名孔子或其他“先圣”所创。王莽为了做皇帝,曾利用图谶。东汉光武帝刘秀也利用图谶作为自己继承西汉王朝的合法根据,以后的东汉历代皇帝也都是笃信图谶的,当时的知识分子除了要精通儒家经典以外,还需懂图谶之学,即“博贯五经,兼明图谶”。
