Primitivism, as a kind of cultural trend of thought, shows the nostalgia of ancient nostalgia toward the ideal state in the past and the historic progressive person who admired the development of human culture. The specific manifestations of primitiveism in African American literature during the Harlem Renaissance from the 18th to the 20th century are the return of the black traditional culture, the praise of the noble barbarians, the promotion of the simple values of nature, and the return of urban blacks The description of ancestral life and so on, thus showing a mysterious, romantic and idealistic aesthetic characteristics. Primitivism is not only a kind of cultural reflection in their works, but also a romantic political tactic, a means to achieve cultural identity through “innovation ”.
