This paper scientifically analyzed the formation of scum in melt. The often complex reactions are divided into individual processes: oxidation of the melt surface, tearing and wrinkling of the oxide film, and oxidation. The paper also quantitatively analyzes these basic processes and describes how to simulate these basic processes on a laboratory scale and how to measure the thickness of the oxide film and the tear strength of the oxide film after a short period of exposure.
