最近看到几种介绍饮食疗法的书籍,书中把番薯称为甘薯,或称为番薯,甚至有称甘薯为旋花科植物者。亦有人把《本草纲目》中甘薯的功效与番曹混为一谈。这里有必要将薯蓣科植物甘薯[Dioscorea esculenta(Lour)Burkill]与旋花科植物番薯[Ipom-ea batatas Lam]区别清楚。我国最早的植物学著作《南方草木状》记载:“甘藷,盖薯蓣之类,或曰芋之类,根叶如芋,实如拳,有大如瓯者。皮紫而肉白,蒸粥食之,味如薯蓣,性不甚冷。”《本草纲目》亦用此语描述甘薯的性状。近代植物工作者研究证实,甘薯即薯蓣科植物甜薯。
