在过去二十年间,生物学从一门由各学科简单汇集起来的科学变成了一门各学科有机地结合起来的科学。新的生物学是一门跨越学术领域、农业和医学的综合性科学。美国全国研究理事会的一份报告强烈要求增加对生物研究的基础的投资,例如,应当加强学生的专业培训,特别要注意在妇女和少数民族中招收学生。报告特别强调培训信息科学中的生物学家。报告中列出的关键研究领域是: ○建立在对大分子的认识的基础上的结构生物学。对蛋白质的研究已成熟到了看来即将实现突破的地步,因为借助新的研究工具和日益扩展的数据库现在已能更好地了解蛋白质的复杂折迭结构。
Over the past two decades, biology has evolved from being a simple collection of sciences from one subject to another that organically combines disciplines. The new biology is a comprehensive science spanning academic fields, agriculture and medicine. A report by the National Research Council of the United States strongly calls for increased investment in the foundations of biological research. For example, professional training should be strengthened for students, with particular attention to attracting students among women and minorities. The report places particular emphasis on training biologists in the information science. The key research areas listed in the report are: o Structural biology based on an understanding of macromolecules. Research on proteins has matured to the point where breakthroughs are imminent as the complex structure of proteins is now better understood with new research tools and ever-expanding databases.
