皇家画院早在五代时就出现了,那时的翰林待诏们主要为帝王或贵族画肖像,以及将朝廷的重大活动场景描绘记载下来。宋朝文治社会风尚较盛,画院逐渐摆脱了聚集画匠的单纯功能,开始追求绘画的本质和艺术的格调了,打开了心灵和精神的自由之眼,将他们的观感付诸于绘画上。在宋徽宗赵佶、高宗赵构、孝宗赵眘时代,应该是画院最好的时期,尤以徽宗时代为最。徽宗的艺术天禀,使他不由自主地将生命中最具灵性的智力都倾注到画院和宫廷的各类艺术事业上。

In Song dynasty, there was a flourishing society. The art academy gradually got rid of the simple function of gathering artisans, began to pursue the essence of painting and the style of art, opened the eyes of freedom of mind and spirit, and put their feelings into painting. Zhao Hu in the Song Huizong, Gaozong Zhao structure, Xiaozong Zhao Shen era, should be the best period of the Academy, especially the most Huizong era. Huizong’s artistic talent made him involuntarily devote the most spiritual intelligence in life to all kinds of artistic undertakings in the academy and court.
