This article discusses the issues of untranslatability in the mutual translation of Chinese and English, including the untranslatability of language and the untranslatability of culture. English belongs to the Indo-European language family, while Chinese belongs to the Sino-Tibetan language family. Phonetic system, text structure, rhetorical devices are completely different, the biggest difference is that the two languages can not achieve complete equality and balance. This creates the language’s untranslatability. Different countries have different cultural backgrounds and have many differences in history and culture, religious beliefs and social life. This creates difficulties in translation. But untranslatability is not absolute, and we should understand the coexistence of translatability and untranslatability.
