政变,历来是一些心怀不轨者争权篡位的手段之一。任何一个在位的帝王,都不愿看见这种发生在自己身边,并对自己构成威胁的倒霉事。但是,由于封建统治集团内部尔虞我诈的争斗不断,再加之帝王本身在选择继承人的问题上,与皇后、儿子、权臣们的意见分歧,所以很容易诱发政变的发生。为了窃取权柄,觊觎帝位的皇子后妃、大臣奸佞,不管成功与否,总要孤注一掷,一试方休。一些帝王,包括个别甚至很有才干的帝王,面对突兀而来的政变之祸,往往经受不起这种刺激,未及应变处置,就吓得丧魂失魄,瘫如烂泥,最终于惊恐忧虑之中悄然而死。
