Vocabulary learning is an important part in learning English. It is explicitly stipulated that students should master 600 to 700 words when they graduate from primary school in the National English Curriculum Standards of 2011 which comes from China’s National Education Ministry. However, pupils’ ability of abstract thinking is so weak that it is a big problem for them to read and memorize so many words in a short time.Especially after entering Grade Five, many pupils are tired of learning English on account of the increase of word length and quantity.English belongs to the alphabetic language system so the sound is corresponding to the letter or group of letters.Phonics has been widely used in English-speaking countries and it is definitely effective for their children to memorize the sounds and letters of words. In recent years,Phonics is becoming more and more popular with English teachers from Chinese Taiwan and Hong Kong, and the students in those areas have made progress in vocabulary learning. Therefore, the paper aims to explore the effects of Phonics in the subjects’ word reading, word spelling, word memorizing and their perceptions of Phonics. This research adopts an experimental design, and the subjects are 112 pupils from Class One and Class Two in Grade Five,Jueqi Chengxin Experimental Primary School in Bao’an District of Shenzhen.Class One is the Experimental Group(EG=56)which receives a 16-week Phonics training while Class Two is Control Group(CG=56)which was taught by traditional vocabulary teaching method.First, pre and post questionnaires were adopted to study the subjects’ present English vocabulary learning level. Then, the author focused on the subjects’ changes in the abilities of word reading, word spelling, word memorizing and comprehensive phonics perceptions through analyzing and comparing the results of before and after tests.Besides, the author interviewed 9 subjects after the Phonics training class to obtain their views and feedback on Phonics. The result of the research indicates that Phonics can improve the subjects’ word reading and spelling ability,as well as enhance their comprehensive phonological awareness. Moreover,it is also beneficial to motivate and stimulate their interest in English vocabulary learning. However, the effect of shortening pupils’ memory time is not obvious. It has an active role in optimizing English vocabulary teaching for the sampled school, especially in the aspects of their word reading, word spelling and phonological awareness. It is expected that after systematic training,English teachers can apply Phonics for vocabulary teaching and pupils taught by such teachers can learn more spelling knowledge and enhance their comprehensive cognitive ability.
