  Southwestern(SW)China is an area of active tectonism and erosion,yielding a dynamic,deeply eroded landscape that is hypothesized to have influenced the genetic structure of the resident populations of plants and animals.Iron walnut(Juglans sigillata Dode)is an economically important endemic diploid species to China cultivated worldwide for its high-quality wood and edible nuts.Here,we sampled 36 Iron walnut nature populations throughout the species range in SW China and genotyped a total of 765 individuals at 5 chloroplast DNA fragments and 22 nuclear microsatellite loci,also species distribution models to infer the levels of genetic differentiation,genetic structure,comtemporary/historical levels of gene flows and biogeographical evolutionary history of Iron walnut,and estimated the impacts of climate oscillations and orographic environments on their population demography.
