μ-Opioid receptor agonists,such as codeine,morphine,and meperidine,are potent and inexpensive analgesics,but their abuse liability and side effects continue to stimulate the search for non-addictive and safer pain killers.In addition to treatment of opioid abuse and overdose,μ-opioid receptor antagonists have been used to treat alcoholism and postoperative ileus.Recently,neutral μ-opioid receptor antagonists have been suggested to be a better potential treatment for opioid dependence,opioid overdose,alcohol addiction,and adverse reactions associated with opioid analgesics.
