Identification of a number of human disease genes together with the advances in sequencing technologies has revolutionized the field of molecular diagnostics in the last decade.Among the genes that are routinely being tested are the breast cancer susceptibility genes BRCA1 and BRCA2.For BRCA1/2 mutation carriers the lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is up to 80%.Therefore, it is not surprising that individuals with a family history of these cancers are now opting to know if they have a mutation in one of these genes.One of the inherent drawbacks of sequencing-based approaches is the determination of the actual risk associated with any variant identified in the gene.
