Metal-Organic Frameworks(MOFs)are porous materials consisting of metal ions linked together by organic ligands.ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 are members of one of the most well investigated sub-classes of metal organic frameworks, known as zeolitic imidazolate frameworks(ZIFs).They are formed by tetrahedral metal ions ZnII and CoII(for ZIF-8 and ZIF-67,respectively)coordinated to 2-methylimidazole.[1] These two materials possess high surface area and large pore size making them ideal candidates for gas capture, especially for CO2.[2] MOFs are conventionally synthesized using large amounts of solvent, such as dimethylformamide(DMF)and diethylformamide(DEF).In this poster,we present an alternative environmentally friendly method for the large scale preparation of ZIF MOFs.Our mechanochemical preparation is based on simply grinding the solid-state starting materials in the planetary ball mill without any added solvent. In addition,we show for the first time that the as-synthesized products can be activated by a totally solvent-free method, making the overall synthesis of the MOFs completely solvent-free.In addition,we demonstrate that the ZIFs prepared by these new green route exhibit comparable XRD patterns and BET surface areas to the conventionally prepared analogues.
