Japan, with only one-tenth of China’s population, uses about 140,000 surnames to make a huge contrast with the commonly-used surnames of only about 500 of the 1.3 billion Chinese. This is because the Chinese surname is a symbol of blood and the Japanese surname is a symbol of family business and has unique social functions. The surnames and naming conventions of China and Japan reflect the different family structures of the two countries.
