FEM simulation and evaluation for large marine crankshaft manufacturing process

  Crankshaft is one of the most important components in the large vessels, which act as the heart of diesel engine.Manufacturing the crankshaft runs a long course, in which the bend forging, heat treatment, and the shrink fitting are key processes to determine the quality of the product.Recently,the FEM simulation plays a more and more important role in material processing, the metal flow behavior in complex deformation process, the microstructure and mechanical properties after heat treatment, and the structural deformation in thermal-mechanical process can be predicted and evaluated.In the present research, the section 1 reviews the recently published works for the crankshaft manufacturing process.In section 2, with the measure thermal and mechanical data, the bend forging, heat treatment, and the shrink fitting processes of manufacturing crankshaft were investigated through FEM simulation separately in section 2.1, section 2.2, and section 2.3, the quality of the product during these processes was evaluated, and optimized suggestion were proposed.Finally, the manufacturing trial validated the FEM results and a qualified crankshaft product was obtained with the help of these researches.
