This paper reviews the material issues in optical information engineering, focusing on materials in optical communications, optical storage and optical computing. The preparation and properties of various infrared optical fibers are discussed and analyzed. Fluoride glass fibers are recommended for long-haul optical communication. Disc storage technology is recommended for optical data storage. Four types of optical storage media materials, ablation, phase change, state change and magneto-optical type, are discussed in more detail. For optical computing, optical spatial modulators, optical bistable and integrated optics and materials are introduced.
