Adhesion of leukemia cells to stromal cells confers resistance tospontaneous and drug-induced cell death of leukemia cells, and therefore is also termed cell adhesion-mediated drug resistance. The interaction between the chemokine receptor of CXCR4, which is highly expressed by many leukemia cells, and its ligand CXCL12, secreted bystromal cells within the marrow microenvironment, significantly promotes this adhesion.
